The Importance of Herbs

How Herbs and Nature Help Us

Until man duplicates a blade of grass, nature can laugh at his so-called scientific knowledge. Remedies from chemicals will never stand in favour compared with the products of nature, the living cell of the plant, the final result of the rays of the sun, the mother of all life.

A Little Bit About Herbs

Herbal Medicine is all about healing, about trying to restore balance and harmony to the mind and body.  To stimulate the body's natural healing power to make it heal itself.  The great Greek physician Hippocrates called this healing power “Vis Medicatrix Naturae”.

Herbs can become a whole part of one's life.  Just as people take to yoga, feeling better from the release of tensions and the deepening of self-knowledge which follows, they can also benefit from tapping into the resources of the plant world.

What is Herbal Medicine?

Herbal medicines are medicines which are created from the different components of plants whether that be the flower, the leaves or roots. The final form of medicine can take a number of forms including:

  • Lotions, which are delivered in a smooth liquid.
  • Decoctions, which are boiled on the stove.
  • Syrups, where the herb is incorporated into a sweet liquid.
  • Poultices, which are used on a cloth.
  • Infusions, which are herbs doused in boiling water.
  • Compresses, in which infusions are administered through a cloth.
  • Tinctures, which are alcoholic based creations.
  • Powders, which are applied to the body or taken internally through capsules.
  • Juices.
  • Baths and skin washes.
  • Gargles and mouthwashes.
  • Steam inhalations.
  • Creams.

The History of Herbs

The use of herbs to heal has existed for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations all believed that imbalances in the system are what caused illness and that plants held magical and medicinal properties that would stabilize these imbalances. During the major epidemics and plagues that ravaged Europe, potent herbal remedies were exported to Europe to combat these outbreaks. Herbal treatments also became a popular way to treat smallpox, malaria, and syphilis.

When modern medicine began to increase in scope in the 19th century, traditional practices became outmoded. However, plants have formed the basis for medical treatment through much of human history, and this is still broadly true today. Around a quarter of all modern drugs derived from plants.

By the 20th century, the modern approach to medicine has been to isolate the active element in a plant, turn that into a drug and discard the rest. The truth, however, is that everything in a plant can have benefits which are not always clear at first instance. Furthermore, modern medicine can often be very narrow in focus, concentrating on treatment on a particular limb, organ or deficiency. Herbal medicine is far broader and aims to heal the body in its entirety by assisting and supporting the self-repair mechanisms that work every day to keep our bodies healthy.

Helpful Tips

Herbs and Pharmaceutical Drugs

Some herbal medicines and pharmaceutical drugs can be taken in unison, while other combinations cannot. Indeed, some mixtures of drugs and herbal medicines can have unintended consequences. It is important to inform your GP and/or herbal practitioner of all the medication you are taking so there are no negative side-effects.

Lifestyle Changes

If you wish to use herbal remedies to heal your body, you can help support that process by making some key lifestyle changes. Increasing healthy eating, partaking in regular exercise and getting lots of rest can really assist your body as it goes through the healing process.
